BWL Episode 19 - Legal Schmegal!

A few weeks ago a reader wrote in to ask if I would mind doing a podcast on some of the legal/licensing issues that worship leaders face on a weekly basis. Sounds like a good challenge so I spent a week or so doing a little (emphasis on little) research on the topic. I didn't find a ton of new info but I did learn some things that are helpful. Truth is, the whole licensing thing can be fairly complicated - not to mention a pain in the rear too. Even so, I think it's our duty as leaders of worship to follow the law in this area with precision and integrity. I hope this podcast may help to shed some light on a few of the licensing concepts that are important for modern worship leaders today. Hope you like it!

Note: Special thanks to Image Designs (www.imagedesigns.com) for providing the excellent album art for this show...

BWL Episode 9 - Creating A Great Set List, Shout Outs, & Free Charts

Thank you, thank you everybody for being so patient! This has been a killer week for me! I had originally recorded this podcast last Thursday night. But...I didn't really like how the last 15 minutes turned out - just too much rambling on my part and didn't really feel specific enough. One of the reasons that I started this whole thing was to offer very specific and practical tips for worship leaders - especially those who are just starting out.

In this pod cast I highlight three very different songs that you might be interested in using during one of your services. I also spend about 20 minutes sharing a strategy that I have used over the years to create set lists. It sort of seems really technical at first but in the end is just a graphical way to "see" the service flow before it happens. Basically put, creating a set list is about deciding where you want to go emotionally/spiritually within the service and then creating a path to get there.

BWL Episode 4 - Compression, Using A Compressor In The Worship Setting

Ever heard someone say, "that vocalist was just way too loud!" Or, "I couldn't even hear the guitar..." Or, "the mix was fine but everytime the chorus came around the singers were drowned out by that electric guitar!" Well...welcome to the world of the worship leader. I'm joking but only somewhat. Clearly it is the responsibility of most worship leaders, whether volunteer, part-time, or full-time, to manage the overall sound of the worship band during each service. In most cases, this means managing a group of volunteers who will run the sound board and control the level of each musician or vocalist on the stage. Given the wide range of styles and range of abilities that exist within such a group of volunteers this can seem like an almost impossible task. One of the tools available to the worship leader and sound team is the use of compression on specific channels to control the dynamic range of sound that may occur during any given performance.

While this podcast really just scratches the surface of what there is to know about a compressor it is a good introduction to the device and should serve to give you an idea of how it can be used within the worship setting.

BWL Presents...Playing Behind The Beat

While digging around on my computer yesterday I found some old videos that I actually shot about two years ago with another friend of mine, Dave Sims. At the time of the filming, Dave was just finishing school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. An accomplish bassist, song writer, arranger and performer, I hired him to play bass for a yearly worship gig that I play each year in Michigan. It's kinda funny but this video was filmed long before http://www.baldworshipleader.com/ but even then I had this desire to do something in the way of a worship "help site" or whatever you want to call it. After that weekend gig I convinced Dave to come and work with me in Orlando as an intern in the worship ministry at LifePoint Christian Church and a few months later he and his wife packed their bags and moved down to Florida. Last year Dave attended FullSail, a highly specialized school for recording arts, and graduated with a degree in Sound Recording. Just a few weeks ago he moved out to Tennessee to work at Dark Horse Studios, one of the top studios in Nashville. To all you bass players out there - listen to what he has to say 'cause he's really one of the best bass players that I've ever had the opportunity to jam with and no doubt he is going places career-wise. God has blessed him big-time.

BWL Bonus Episode - Laying drums with midi samples...and much more!

Hey folks! I'm back with another podcast...finally! This one features a discussion on layering sampled drums with live drums to create a real "punchiness" on the kick and snare of the kit. I originally recorded this with Steve Lacey and Joey Neiman in September of 2005. For some reason I never was able to get it finished and uploaded so here it appears as a "bonus" podcast. I plan to have my regular podcasts back on schedule starting on Thursday as I interview Greg Martin and talk about using compression and EQ in the context of worship ministry.

- My Story (basically, how I got into Worship Leading as a career)

Today is the first official day for my new site to be open and trust me, I have some cool things planned. The most important thing to let you know is that I don't claim to know everything about worship leading - far from it! I do, however, love leading worship and I enjoy the chance to discuss the characteristics and nature of worship as it exists in the modern world. If you have a chance to listen to the podcast, please send some feedback to phil@baldworshipleader.com or send questions if you like. I will do all I can to answer any questions that you have on the next podcast. If I can, I'm going to try and publish a new podcast each week, probably on Thursdays.
